In this issue we report on a project looking at gang culture within schools, a topic at the forefront of public debate and parental concerns. We also provide a review of the Derby Drug Intervention Programme, a report on Bath and Bristol Universities achieving the police-approved Secured Environments award, and information on Perpetuity's work on a QuADS audit of one area's young people's service provision.
February also sees the launch of the Security Health Check, a new service in which Perpetuity will assist organisations to assess the extent to which their security is fit for purpose. If you have any thoughts about our work, please do not hesitate to contact me personally. Best Wishes, Martin Gill

Gangs and Schools - Is there a significant issue?
As part of its ongoing work with the NASUWT, Perpetuity has been exploring the issue of gangs and schools in the UK. Stage one of the research which is now complete has adopted a case study approach in four urban schools in England, supported by a literature review of recently published and unpublished material covering the areas of gangs, street culture, schools and school related interventions in the UK. Interviews have taken place with staff and young people in schools to investigate whether there is a problem that needs to be managed. The research has also unveiled some examples of interventions and policies that have been implemented in schools to prevent the problems from escalating further.

Review of the Derby Drug Intervention Programme (DIP)
In June 2008, Perpetuity was commissioned by Derby Community Safety Partnership (DCSP) to undertake a review of the first year of the re-commissioned DIP service in Derby. The review was designed to address four key areas including: engagement and retention, crime, partnership working and wraparound support. The review was a qualitative study, and consultation with local stakeholders and 29 DIP clients found that overall, the DIP in Derby was having a positive impact on the lives of drug using adults within the criminal justice system. The final report presented to the CSP proposes a number of recommendations and provides the foundation on which to develop and improve the DIP in Derby.
Kerry Hodges, Assistant Head of Service for Young People and Criminal Justice made the following comment about the review:
"We are really pleased with the report Perpetuity have produced, it has provided a sound evidence base to steer the development of the programme going forward."

- An action plan completely in tune with your organisation and available resources.
- Confidence that you are meeting regulatory requirements relating to public and staff safety, including corporate manslaughter legislation.

- Invaluable insights into how evolving crime may impact on the risks that you face.

Bath and Bristol top the class for university campus safety
The University of Bath and the University of Bristol are the first universities in the country to achieve the police-approved Secured Environments award. The Head of Estates at the University of Bristol commented:
"Secured Environments is the first real heavyweight in terms of the security world; others have not got the academic rigour and background".
Feedback from the panel who conducted the audit in Bath showed the University scored highly for its commitment to providing a secure environment and for the way its security team is managed and run.
The audit at Bristol showed that the University had invested in effective processes and management in order to reduce crime and the fear of crime and worked hard to provide a balanced approach to security.

Auditing services against organisational standards for drug and alcohol treatment services (QuADS)
As some of you will be aware, a portion of the grant for young people's specialist substance misuse treatment services will be pooled into the Area Based Grant. Commissioners and services will therefore be required to provide an evidence base to support current or proposed service provision, and at the same time demonstrate that services meet relevant occupational standards. Perpetuity is currently working with one partnership to undertake a QuADS audit of young people's service provision to highlight the key strengths, weaknesses and areas for improvement. If you are interested in undertaking a service review or a QuADS audit please contact Perpetuity on prci@perpetuitygroup.com or 0116 222 5555. | |
